HoloLens Experience Imagery

This case study demonstrates my ability to:

  • Be hands-on, and deliver refined composition, look-dev, lighting, and compositing to tell a story.

VFX Supervision, 3D Art Direction, composition design, scene layout, lighting and compositing. I led an internal brainstorming session to concept use cases for the HoloLens. This is one of the images that came from that exercise.

 

The challenge

Microsoft HoloLens is a smart headset that blends our physical and digital worlds in a new Mixed Reality (MR). It is distinct from AR and VR in the amount of interaction it offers between the real world and digital holograms.

Our mission was to visually introduce MR - along with the potential use cases - to the world. We were strategic partners in identifying and designing the most impactful brand assets for HoloLens.

Our approach

We needed to target two groups at once: developers, to inspire them to create for this platform, and early-adopter consumers to drive demand and create a marketplace. Through lifestyle imagery, we invited them to imagine new worlds with new possibilities.

My role

As 3D Art Director, the holograms were my responsibility. To create the images, we captured custom photography on-location, then rendered the holograms separately using 3D software. I led the 3D team as we developed an ownable look and feel, concepted use-cases, and refined our processes both on-set and in-studio. The Creative Lead/Art Director for this overall account was Zoe McNamara.

On-set

I served as VFX Supervisor during several multi-day, multi-location photo shoots. I helped our processes grow increasingly sophisticated with each shoot. This included hologram visualization that helped make our shots much more dynamic and personal.

The impact

Today, Microsoft is seen as a leader in the MR space. Ahead of its time, it beat rivals Apple and Magic Leap to the market by over half a decade. During that time, we helped increase awareness and find their new target audience: enterprise customers.
